Why You Need a Monitoring Checklist
If you're spending $3,000+ per month on Google or Meta Ads, you need a systematic way to catch problems before they drain your budget. The average account loses 12% of ad spend to anomalies that go undetected. This checklist covers everything you should be monitoring — from basic metrics to advanced anomaly detection.Daily Checks (5 minutes)
These are the non-negotiable daily checks every ad manager should do:- CPA check: Compare today's CPA to your 7-day rolling average. Flag anything above 130%.
- Conversion count: Are conversions still coming in? Zero conversions for 4+ hours during peak time is a red flag.
- Spend pacing: Is your daily spend tracking normally? Spending 2x faster than usual means something changed.
- Active campaigns count: Did any campaigns unexpectedly pause or get disapproved?
Weekly Checks (15 minutes)
- Conversion tracking verification: Click through your ads and verify the conversion pixel fires correctly on the thank-you page.
- Landing page status: Check that all landing page URLs return a 200 status code. 404s and 500s waste every click.
- Search term report (Google Ads): Review search terms that triggered your ads. Add irrelevant terms as negative keywords.
- Audience overlap (Meta Ads): Check if your ad sets are competing against each other.
- Budget efficiency: Calculate your ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) for each campaign. Reallocate budget from low performers.
Monthly Checks (30 minutes)
- Tracking audit: Use Google Tag Assistant and Meta Pixel Helper to verify all tags fire correctly across your entire site.
- Attribution review: Are your attribution windows still appropriate? Check for attribution model changes.
- Competitor analysis: Have new competitors entered your keyword space? Are CPCs rising industry-wide?
- Account structure audit: Are you running too many small campaigns that don't get enough data to optimize?
- Quality Score review (Google Ads): Check your average quality score. Scores below 5 mean you're overpaying per click.
The Problem with Manual Checklists
The checklist above works — when you actually do it. But reality gets in the way:- You skip the daily check because of a meeting
- Your vacation coverage doesn't know what to look for
- A Friday afternoon deployment breaks tracking and nobody checks until Monday
- A gradual CPA increase of 5% per day goes unnoticed for 2 weeks
